YES, YOU READ CORRECTLY. Over 34,000 animals were destroyed in just the 3 largest shelters in Tarrant county in 2008. We must increase adoptions in order to save more pets in 2009 and beyond.
"You" can help increase adoptions and make a difference in the lives of defenseless and homeless pets. You can help stop the killing. HOW? Here are just a few of the ways you can help save the life of a dog or cat:
SPREAD THE WORD: Without the public's involvement, homeless pets will continue to die in silence. Get involved in your community and learn about what's happening to homeless pets. By informing your family, friends and neighbors about the importance of spaying and neutering pets and adopting from shelters and rescues, you will make all the difference in the world for pets in need. Until there are no more pets being euthanized in animal shelters, we don’t need even one more litter of puppies. Pet over population is a tragic problem. We MUST educate our friends, family, and neighbors about the huge problem of pet over population.
VOLUNTEER: You can volunteer your time at a shelter or rescue. Check with your local shelter or Rescue to see what you can do to help. Many caring individuals are needed for a variety of tasks. Encourage your teenage children to volunteer and to get involved, so that they too can understand the plight of pet homeless pets.
FOSTER: ALL RESCUES are always short of foster homes. If you don’t know of a rescue personally, check out Petfinder. com to find one in your zip code. There is a Rescue for almost every breed and many mixed breed Rescues, in addition to cat and other animal rescues. Of course, if you, like us, prefer Shih Tzu, Lhasas, and other little fluffs, DFW Tzus and More always has a desperate need for foster homes. Just click on our Make a Difference button to complete a volunteer application. The more foster homes that become available, the more pets we can save.
ADOPT, ADOPT, and ADOPT: Whether you adopt from an animal shelter or a Rescue, you are saving a life. Remember the important words, “DON’T BREED OR BUY WHILE MILLIONS DIE”. Encourage your family and friends to adopt. If they say they want a “puppy”, there are many puppies available from both shelters and Rescues….both pure and mixed breeds if they are willing to wait a little longer. However, please suggest to them that adult pets often make the best companions, especially for someone who works. Adult pets are usually already house trained and past the chewing stage. Whatever age pet you adopt, you can make a difference, adopting one animal at a time.
